Default ‘93 LCD Panel Issue

All;

I have a 1993 LT1 Corvette, and am having an issue with the LCD display in the instrument cluster. I initially started seeing an issue where the LCD display was blank on very cold days, but this has now progressed to being an intermittent issue on warm days as well.

I have an electronics background, and found information that frequently this issue is caused by the ribbon cable going from the cluster to the LCD display. I replaced the ribbon with a new one, and for a few days though I’d solved the issue...but then it came back. Banging the top of the dash will sometimes restore the LCD display to functioning, but it’s not reliable. Sometimes, it will simply go blank, at other times, a good pothole with cause the display to “scramble” a little bit, then either continue working, or go blank. From time to time a “sys” message appears on the LCD display while it’s working.

I’m thinking there’s a possibility there’s a cold solder joint on one of the components on the back of the cluster, or an issue with the connector, or associated wiring at the lower left hand of the cluster, where it plugs into the car’s wiring...

Am I missing something, or should I be looking at something else? Taking the instrument cluster out of the car isn’t the worst job I’ve ever done, but I’d rather only do it one more time, and fix the problem permanently.

Suggestions?

Batee is where I got the ribbon cable, and information on how to replace the cable...but I don’t recall any information that would apply to deeper troubleshooting...I’ll have to go back and check. Thanks for the suggestion!

The LCD on my 91 started to go off and on like you experienced and i sent it to Batee to have rebuild. The Tach didn't work since i originally bought it so had them fix that too. Great company to work with.
