Some people have said that you can reach behind the bumper and get to it, but I didn’t see how. I didn’t want to push on the bumper and bend it too far to have room. When I took out all the lights to get it ready for the paint I removed the license plate and reverse light, then the inside tail light, and then was able to reach the outer tail light through the hole of inner tail light that I just removed. There might be an easier way but that’s how I got to it. To remove the housing there is two 10mm screws holding it in.
Do I need to remove the housing or does the light assy pop out via a clip?
No way can I reach it with the muffler there. Not sure if I dropped it I could will double ck
May take the plate off cant imagine trying to use a socket when yo

So the light itself stays in or the whole thing has to be unscrewed and pulls out the front?
1. find a skinny kid with long arms....they can go right under easily..(my son in law does mine)
2. if you have to do it, there's room if you remove license and back up light fixture.
3.I've heard of guys going to wal-mart....5 bucks install....
4 takes a 1/4 turn to remove.... good luck.......
Pulled the bulb assy out of the R reverse (and the clip broke of course) that reverse light assy will NOT pop out the front theres some tab that keeps it in. Didnt wanna break anything else.
So dropped the rear muffler some..can just about reach it, looks like the catback is going to have to come down no way around it. WTF were these people thinking? Whats wrong wtih 2 screws on the back. The joys of these cars..
If theres some trick to getting the reverse light assy out let me know. Didnt want to push in so assuming it pulls out through the front?
I prefer to take the license plate off, backup lights out, and make lots of grunting noises.
wife leaves me alone for hours.
thinks i’m having a particularly difficult task.
Then SHE cleans the pool, empties the trash and sweeps the porch!🤪
Wow... lot of ways to change a light bulb....but remove the tag, less than 60 seconds....remove inner tail light via two 10 mm nuts (2 minutes with a ratchet, one minute with a gear ratchet), insert hand into removed inner brake lamp hole, reach in , twist out bulb socket in outer lamp housing, insert new bulb (less than one minute) .reinstall reversal of removal. Done before commercial break is over.
I have changed DOZENS of bulbs as I described. I am trying to save you a bunch of work. If you can't reach your hand through the tag (license) out, then just take the two 8 (or or 7mm) screws out of the back up lamp and remove it, then there is no reason you can;t do it exactly as I said.

I did mine this way and I am a big armed man. There were also two bolts that bolted the bumper to the frame behind the license plate that I removed as well. This is on a early c4. I removed those bolts and was easily able to remove the inner tail light, then the outer bulb change through the inner tail light hole. I changed both bulbs while I was in there as. well.
It was not a bad job at all. Good luck with yours.
If the light housings are original and you are planning to remove the bolts, be prepared for the plastic mounts that those bolts go into to break. Both mounts on 2/4 of mine fell apart when taking them out. Had to use epoxy and thread to glue them back together - it's not pretty, but it worked for now.
I had my 84 housings break as well. I bought some longer bolts and cut the heads off. This made some studs. I then drilled the holes with the proper size for tapping the studs. Ran a tap into the holes and then double nutted the stud and screwed them in the housings. I also put some JB Weld in the holes to hold the studs solid in the housings. Used nuts and flat washer w/lock washers to secure the assembly in the bumper. They have been in there for about 6 years and no problems.
Reverse light doesnt wanna budge have no idea why, it should
So removed the 10mm bolt next to the muffler tip, removed the bolt that conects the muffler to the hanger.....stuck my arm up and done! Stock tips only need to come down a little bit that way you dont bend the bumper & risk cracking the paint. //
Took all of 5 minutes, light twists and drops all the way out
Fwiw the 2057 rather than 1157 is a multifunction bulb (turn stop running etc) uses 30 percent less volts either one works.
