Is it just me or do our blower motors suck compared to newer vehicles? I have the wonderful C68 system and the amount of air that comes out of the vents on "high" is pitiful. I thought maybe it was my controller, etc. Either way, I applied 12v directly to the motor which is the voltage it would receive on "high". I compared this to the amount of air that comes out of the vent while the controller is set to 10, and it's the same. So I know it's not a controller issue or a resistor issue.
I have verified the rest of the system is working properly(blend door etc.) and all of that functions properly. My system cannot keep up in the heat but our newer vehicles have a blower that is incredible. Is it possible that my blower motor is just tired? Is there an upgrade that will blow harder? Mine is an '89 and I believe it's the original. I want to feel the air blowing in my face but currently I feel barely anything. When I put my hand in front of the vents I can definitely feel a decent amount of air but I feel like it should be considerably more.
What does everyone else think? Am I just nuts or what?
I think I saw a thread recently where the air flow was being restricted by crap that had accumulated on the evaporator over time. But it’s a big job to get it out.
I discovered that my 2002 s10 used the same blower motor as my 86 and it would blow your hat off if you ran it on high. I swapped blower motors but it made no difference. Then I opened up the box and found the evaporator had a foam filter on it that had mostly disintegrated and was clogging up the coils. I replaced it and it made a big difference but still not what I wanted. Look at your center vents, they are partly blocked to restrict air flow. I opened them up with my dremel. Now I have respectable air flow, on a 100 degree day I just leave the climate control set at 72 and it cools down and the blower backs down just like it is supposed to.
As mentioned, the big culprit is a plugged evaporator. Also, need to check all the foam seals in the ducting connections, as they break down over time as well.
