Default Shift kit or not?

Ok guys, my tranny rebuilder just called me and suggested that I put in a shift kit because it will help prolong the life of the rebuilt tranny.

Sounds good to me, price is around $150, he wasn't sure of the exact price.

What do you think, any downsides. Is his statement accurate about prolonging the life or is it the opposite?

I'm also swapping the 1500 stock TC for the GM 2500rpm.

TIA

As I understand it (no expert) the prolonging of the life of the tranny is because the gears shift quicker so the clutches slip less. Therefore less wear and less heat. I had a shift kit in mine and took it out. I like the stock performance just fine. :yesnod:

The shift kit will prolong the life of the transmission and provide snapper shifts. Since you are adding the 2500 stall speed, I would install the shift kit because it will firm up the shift feel. The installation of the 2500 stall speed will make the stock shifts feel lazier and the shift kit will restore the shift feel.

Between the TC and shift kit it will feel like a different car, very agressive. The only "downside" is the chirp you will get on the 1-2 shift under hard throttle. :yesnod:

A good shift kit tends to extend tranny life but of course puts more stress on the remaining drive train elements, but then so will that TC. After all isn't a hard launch and quick shifts what us performance guys want from our Vettes.

BTW, find out which shift kit he's talking about; $150 sounds very low especially if it's installed. My tranny guy charged $225 for a custom TransGo setup; TransGo is generally considered to be one of the best kits.

If you install a shift kit yourself....just know thats it not for the faint at heart, and that you can really screw things up, if your not X-TRA carefull....been there done that...

Good luck.

Yes do it! I put a Trans-Go kit in mine and love it. It was quite a pain though. Really messy.

I am thinking of istalling a BM shift kit into my 91. I've been told here that it is no good and that Trango is preferable. But then I talked to a guy that is working with gearboxes (automatics) and he told me to stay away from TransGo

I already have a BM kit, should I istall it or not?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but the topic is the same so I figured....

That's not a hijack, it's the same subject and I'm glad if my posts can help others...

I should find out the exact price today and what kind it is that he wants to install, $150-$200 was the price off the top of his head so I'm figuring it will be closer to $200.

I won't be installing it myself, the tranny rebuilder will do it for me. I'm not that ambitious yet... :D

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'm gonna go ahead and do it.

When the Trans-Go Perfromance Shift kit is installed "correctly", it will improve the shifts in most cases as long as the 2-4 band & 3-4 clutches are in good shape. If the 1-2 shift after the installation of the "shift kit" is "too firm", then this can be addressed by installing the Trans-Go Shift kit Junior accumulator setup with the 2-4 band adjustment that is recommended in this kit. I have found that by combining these two kits, to work "very well" in the past several years. You get smooth 1-2 part throttle shifts, and progressively firmer shifts with more throttle.

I just installed the B&M shift kit ($30). I had put one in my 70 GranSport yeats ago and loved it. This one feels the same. I only installed the "Heavy Duty" version, not the "Street Strip" version. I just firms up the shifts, but not too much. At mild throttle around town it is just an instant shift. At full throttle hang on. You can always go back and bump it up to the "Street Strip" one later if you want. It was not very difficult to do. I also installed Mobil One Synthetic Trans Fluid at the same time. :seeya

I have no shift kit in my car, and under hard acceleration it will bark the tires quite loud and kick the rear out sideways on the 1-2 shift. Yesterday I was driving down the street and nailed it at about 25 or 30 mph and when it downpoopiefted it barked the tires quite loud also. That is a totally stock tranny with 315 tires in the back that are practically new. I used to have the HPP adjust the shift firmness and it would bark the tires under normal acceleration on the 1-2 shift. I thought about a shift kit at one point, but am very happy with the performance that I have right now. :)
