I've looked for a 383 crank that is internaly balanced but I can't seem to find one. Who makes one?
If it is internally balanced can I still use my normal dampener and flexplate, or do I have to get a 400 dampener and flexplate? If I do go externally balanced will I for sure have to change my balancer?
Scat offers a cheap 3.75 stroke crank that will internally balance, its their 9000 series cranks. It can be had for less than $300. Its cast iron and rated to handle 700 hp.
Lunati, Callies, Eagle etc. offer forged cranks also in a 3.875 stroke (396ci) for the same money as a 383ci. I believe the Eagle is about $600 dollars and the others around $1000.
I notice in your sig your on a budget and plan on some boost. The Scat crank should suffice, spend money on good pistons and rods.
You can use your stock damper and flexplate, just make sure the crank is a 1 piece rear seal.
Got the forged Scat 3.75" crank. Spent the extra $$ on Mallory metal and had it totally internally balanced. Went with a smaller race balancer. Don't ever have to worry about replacing the flywheel and matching the balance to the old one. Everything's neutral balanced now.
If you use 6" connecting rods with the Scat crank, it comes real close to balancing internally. It doesn't take to much work according to the shop that built mine. The long rod leads to a lighter piston.
The shop that did mine can balance a flywheel seperately from the assembly. They keep records and if need be they would be able to match the balance later on down the road. You should check with your machine shop if that's an issue with you.
I'm planning on doing this very budget, I want to reuse my 5.7" rods, but I will get SRP pistons. I was planning on just changing pistons and rings(355) but I'm trying to see if the 383 is cheap enough to do at the same time.
I called flatlanderracing.com and they told me the Scat 9000's are externally balanced. I'd rather spend an extra $200 on a crank than spending it on a new balancer and such. Just trying to figure out my options.
