Although this probably has nothing to do with your problem, I was surprised to see that no one mentioned the catalytic converter. To me, this can be your worst enemy and easiest to isolate if part of a "tuning" or "timing" problem. If the converter is restricted at all you can have real major tuning problems. So, I always first disconnect and see how see runs. I had this problem with my 84 and also with my 90 TPI. On the 84 I just bought which had a complete engine rebuild and then would not start or stay running regardless of timing adjustments--replaced the converter and it instantly was running. On the 90, started her one morning several years ago and the engine sounded like the bearing were all grinding down to zero babbit and a rod was going to come flying out the block. Yep, the converter was the problem here too. Just another suggestion that none of you proably need--but keep this area in the back of your mind when all else fails. bill :bs
Just a quick note on the original post, a tune up can solve a number of problems on an old motor but the coolant problem could have been diagnosed when pulling the plugs out the first time, unless the plugs were so bad they couldn't be read. Which would also indicate some severe oil burning. Anyway I hope the head gasket fixes it for you.
Just a check on your original post.....Did you ever get the crossfire to run OK????
Just wondering if we gave you any help....Or??????
Would like to know....My '84 runs GREAT!!!!!!
THANKS
