As I am in removing everything in sight to fix the fuel lines, I have decided to remove the A/C as well - really do not use it and i could take it out to make some space. does anyone know if there is anything special to consider with the belt fitment/direction - I would really like to remove everything from that area -and not have a belt delete pulley if possible I thought I read somewhere that was a thing but for some reason I cannot find the images or thread again
For many years I have used a standard rotation water pump and only four pulleys. Crank, Back side of power steering pump, alternator and water pump.
I use a turnbuckle on the top alternator mount for old style belt tensioning.
After removing A/C pump I also removed the core and modified the fan housing.
'85. - did you change the water pump or leave it stock? - -also are those braided fuel lines upper right of the photo? - that's a little house cleaning -
just looked - forgot I still have the air pump attached and linked - that delete may be in the future - but not at the moment . . . .may look at a couple of other options - maybe just pulley option as some have used - unless shorter belt with tensioner will work?

I used an 88-92 camaro ac delete kit on my 84 C4. Not sure if you can use on an 85. GM used to offer this kit. I bought mine from amazon and is a dorman product. Some same year gm truck kits are available too but unsure if they will work.

can you use something like this for the alternator?
I replaced the water pump with a short standard rotation and reused the stock pulley. No problem for years.
Those are old pictures. I have an 84 and modified the stock alternator/power steering reservoar bracket to use a turnbuckle.
I removed my AC since it has never worked. I'd just bought a new reverse rotation waterpump so I routed the belt slightly differently and bought a shorter belt. I have the smog delete pulley still. I'll change the waterpump soon enough and get rid of the belt tensioner and smog pulley next.
Did the same as many replaced WP with standard rotation and just have alt, crank n PS. Tho my cheap ebay alum short pump I needed 1/8" WP spacers. I just took it all out and made diy alum block off plate, think someone sells one on ebay
There is a march arm/bracket and adjusting rod for the guide I copied on here long ago but think you can get both in a alt mount kit for cheaper on ebay
reverse rotation/standard rotation crank rotates clockwise correct ? (looking at the engine) - tensioner gone or still in place? - sorry slower than usual brain day for me
maybe the question should be when we say standard rotation are we saying stock which if i understand correctly is counter clock wise? - no need to change the pump after removing everything even if the direction of the pump changes?
My 383 i built for my 88 has no ac or air pump
I can post pics of my setup with part numbers if you want, but basically I have-
-tuff stuff black 1 wire alternator. Fits the stock lower bracket that was original to car. Upper is a adjustable rod I made that goes to head.
- stock type aluminum waterpump for an 88, and original pulley
- stock type p/s pump with original pulley
- on pass side i have a Mercruiser belt tensioner.. adjusts easy as hell. You can change/adjust belt in seconds.
- stock crank.pulley
I'm a boat guy and after seeing this setup for 20 years now I did it to mine. Works great. No belt flap or any other issues.
