Default What's Too Much Timing???

I know this is a loaded question. I am looking for other people's settings and experiences with this. I have a 86 coupe with a 355 engine. Installed is heads, cam , intake, LT headers. The compression is 10.5.1 with a mild cam 218/224. I know base timing is 6-8 degrees on a stock engine. I am looking for a good starting point or is 6-8 where it should be.

Thanks for any info.

If you're tuning it doesn't matter as much. Mine liked 8 degrees base 20 at idle and 35 wide open with cruise around 44. Watch the knock count and spark retard to see what it likes. That's what I did.

I would not screw with the timing unless you want to datalog and see what gives the most knock counts on the scanner.

Carb or EFI? Carb is pretty simple set distributor for 36-38 degrees at 3k RPM. If you're use old school hei you can get recurve kit which consists of springs and different weights.
aftermarket EFI varies depending on system from same as above to ecm or icm control. Tuners prefer using a module to control timing, so they can dial in exactly how they want it.
if you're using stock EFI you will.need tuning equipment and software to dial in your tune.

spark knock, too much timing, slow starting.. not enough. i just set it to where the engine starts on a quarter rotation, its usually pretty close
