after getting things back together and getting the car started ('85) (smog delete, a/c delete, iac replace, tb air foil added, oil change, fuel filter change, fuel lines change, coolant hoses change, oil cooler hoses change - at the cooler) - the drivers side now has some sort of rattle sound - more so toward the front but the entire side - when I put the stethoscope on it it is not consistent - almost sounds like a couple of rocks in a can sort of - I let it go for a minute and revved to see if it went away - it did not - so I shut it down and now am hoping it is not something excessively tragic - does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on what could have popped up like that? - it has not been on much at all this spring since all of this has started so I am really not sure what could have caused this noise out of no where?
engine temp when i noticed it yesterday was getting to 140 give or take - i was watching the idle after the iac install and the belt with the new delete stuff - so it was running for a few minutes 10 or so - then i heard it more toward the front - but definitely across the entire side - I do not know what a piston slap would sound like (or what it is). but it sounded higher and not deeper - i mean toward the top of the motor not in - i thought briefly it had something to do with the pump delete and the one screw that goes into the side of the head - but it felt tight - did not know if it could be too tight - or how sound can travel along
exhaust - I wondered when I first started it there was a little smoke on the passengers side - i dismissed it as a little oil got on the exhaust and burned off - I have not seen any since - I will try the belt thing

Once warm I'd only go a minute but you can do a couple on a cold engine.
the only thing I could think of that changed physically and was attached to the head on this side only was the bracket. I removed the circled bolt and spacer in the bottom pic circled in blue - it appears the sound may have left. I thought it was tight - my questions are how tight can I make that before breaking something - and maybe even the other question is - do I need that one? the top pic shows the triangular formation of the brackets - i wonder if that will be enough

thanks - I changed the pcv - just in case - I will check again with and without the bolt - 2 other thoughts/questions - is there a target torque for that bolt? bracket for pump? and with the set-up is it a necessary bolt - ? I realize extra stability - just curious as I had set mine with an extra piece in the bracket creating a more triangular bracket?
thanks again - I feel like I am close to finally driving it this year . . . .
it seems to be coming from the pcv - kind of radiating from that - it does not appear right at start up - it takes a minute or two then shows up more clearly -
even the new one - they had a rattle right out of the box - is that supposed to be that way?
is this a problem/concern - or nothing really - ?
it could- I suppose be a sound that has been there but was masked by a few other noises? or is this from a vibration that is new - - -
the belt seems to be rotating fine - with or without the extra bolt - it is not shaking or vibrating wobbling or otherwise - seems smooth
hopefully it's nothing - but I have not been that lucky lately - I am anxious to get back on the road - but i also do not want something to break and lose it for the entire summer
I had one of the pre-cats fail. The rattle was loud enough that I thought either the motor had suffered a major failure or the pressure plate or flywheel broke.

Just something else to check.
Yes, that happens frequently. Happened on my recent 87. very loud rattle. I have removed the cats and when I did big chunks fell out. No more rattle of course.

any thoughts?
thanks for the help

You can disconnect the PCV and plug the hose for a test. It won't hurt anything to run without it for a few minutes. If it is the PCV, it's not hurting anything to let it rattle, but it points to a probable vacuum issue. Check all the hoses for splits and put a vacuum gauge on it. It should be in the 18-20" range at idle. I'd also check the timing.
