Default Car is dead

Not cranking, no accessories working. My battery is practically brand new and I hooked up my tender which showed the battery at 82% and taking a charge. Car ran just fine a week ago showing no symptoms. Opened the door yesterday and lights came on. Popped the hatch. Everything was fine. Turned the key in the ignition and I hear a slight click and then nothing.
Car just came back from the shop a couple weeks ago for routine maintenance plus a rear gear swap with speedo fix. If something was amiss, my guys would have noticed. And again, it ran just fine last week. But maybe this could have thrown something off? Yes, I plan on speaking with them and waiting to hear back.
My thoughts are alternator - but this would have drained the battery more I'm guessing. Maybe ignition switch? Maybe a fuse? Maybe VATS?
This problem really seems to be acute. No signs or symptoms leading up to this. Hoping this is something I can fix as a novice. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and what the etiology could be. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried jumping it? Even a practically new battery can fail. Maybe a bad cell or cells. Take investigative steps then come back and provide information to forum so you can receive constructive answers.

Could be a loose battery cable.

I just went through this and it appears to have been a bad battery. I would charge the battery up all the way with a charger, not a tender, and then try to start the beast. If it doesn't start follow the FSM troubleshooting chart. If it starts, see what the alternator is putting out, Should be 14-and-a-fraction volts. Turn on everything electrical and if it drops to below 13, get the alternator checked. If not, look for a light left on or some other parasitic drain on the system.

Hope this helps!

I would start by checking your battery connectors. Being made of lead they have a habit of corroding very easily. I would start at the battery and then move on to the starter motor connections.

New Batteries are not perfect every time. The very first thing you should do is charge the battery completely (until it gasses) so your electrolyte gets stirred up nicely. One never knows how long the battery sat at the shop before you bought it. A lot of stores can have flooded lead acid batteries sit for several months without being charged. This hurts the capacity of the battery to be left without charge, the self discharge rate of a FLA battery is high enough that they loose a good deal of the first charge and will sit partially charged for extended periods of time which is bad for the battery.

Clean the posts on the battery with a battery cleaners tool or a soft wire brush. Then clean the insides of the battery connector the same way. Put the connectors on the battery and tighten them down. A lot of people think they have to be torqued or something but all the battery connector's nut needs is just snug. A tighter connector will not get any more out of the battery... I like to use a little battery grease over the connection to keep oxygen out of the connection.

Having tested batteries for many years I can tell you that most battery chargers (or tenders) are not accurate at telling you the battery State of Charge. This is better done with the proper tools that can measure the SoC of a battery by looking at the electrolyte.

Like I mentioned before, remove the battery and charge it up on a powerful charger ~10 amps or more until it is fully charged and then re-install it.

I agree foresters but I would up it to bad Battery connections. In more than a few occasions as a dealership mechanic and in the after of of not I have seen Full Battery dead cars spark to life with a shake and tug of the cables.

So give the terminals a good look for corrosion and properly Tighend

I just went through the same thing, click, then nothing. Positive cable was loose and wouldn't tighten. Bolt was stripped out, I'm assuming from moving around. Replaced bolt, all is well. Good luck!

SOLVED
I was in a hurry on Friday so I didn't take out any tools other than my battery charger. If I wasn't so impatient I could have simply tightened the positive connection and been on my way. Humbled but very thankful it was something so incredibly simple.

Glad to hear it worked out. Had the same thing happen to me a month or so after new battery. Ignition on dash lit up, fuel pump ran, went to crank it everything went black. Just a loose cable...cleaned and tightened more and no issues since!
