Currently in process of removing engine for rebuild and want to clean up wife's 84. I want to repaint all frame brackets, rails, wheel wells, underside hood, etc. etc. What would you recommend for paint and gloss? What would you paint engine with?
A lot of that stuff shouldn't be painted but CLEANED real good. The fenderwells should be raw fiberglass and some other stuff too. I painted the underside of my hood with gloss black paint but it's incorrect and is hard to maintain because I clean in there a lot with the amount of driving I do.
Tell ya what though....... A guy had an 84 at our Labor Day car show that had a lot of stuff painted RED to match the exterior and it looked GREAT!!
You have a real good point on some of the fiberglass items--would be better to just really, really cleanup. However, isn't the firewall painted. I got real familiar with blackout and frame painting when I did my 58 but now I have moved on to this 84 (and 72 convert) and simply cannot find any good reference sources other than Haynes. Thought I would shoot with DP90 and then use a black single stage with "some degree of flattening agent" From the appearnce of some of the items on the car the DP90 nearly matches to me. But, I would like to have a more durable final coat for continual cleanup purposes. Thanks for making me think about what not to paint.
I just cleaned my whole engine compartment. Not sure how bad of shape yours is in, but mine was pretty clean for the most part. One thing that REALLY made it look nice is I took steel wool 0001 and polished all the AC lines, brake lines, A-arms, the steeling linkage to a mirror finish. It was actually much easier than I had thought possible. Now its shining probably better than new.
Also took this opportunity to replace ALL the corrugated (sp) wire protection in the engine bay. That in itself was a real nice touch. The old stuff was alright, but has gotten so brittle, you can't hardly touch it.
