Just purchased an '87 Coupe. The A/C system does not have a placard saying that it was converted to 134. Is there any other way to find out? Seller did not know. The compressor says R 12. System is depleted now.
Look at the AC charging ports. They should be different for the R134A or have adapters to make the hoses work. Beyond that, you should get a shop to tell you what is wrong otherwise it is spending time and money to find the leak.
If it's not placarded, it most likely hasn't been changed over. Save yourself some hassle and some money and have it converted over when you have the garage look to see why it's depleted.

Best,

I know it used to be much cheaper but I really don't know what the price is today vs R134a so if they are just a bit more expensive, I'd do R12. You have to at least change the O-rings and possibly the hoses.
The adapters are the tell tale... my cousins 89 was changed over at the dealership and wasn't labeled other than the ports being changed... if a backyard guy did the recharge you'd never know as chances are it wasn't placarded. Other than those two I have no idea.

This. Have done the conversions on two of my vehicles myself. No placard.
