Just read a thread where two users of coated headers need to get them re-coated. Didn't want to jump on that one, but since I'm buying either TPIS coated or LPE Stainless Steel nows a good time to ask.
There are a few members that have TPIS headers that have stayed shiney/pretty for a year +. Mine did not last (chrome like shine). The coating is still good but due to heat they are no longer shiney/like chrome which they were, when installed.
I put less than 2000 miles on them in the last year. I did call TPIS on this and their tech said that my situation is normal. The headers are not ugly, just no shine.
I do like the TPIS since they use the stock bolt setup. I recently purchased new round allan type bolts to correct the minimal clearance space between the head of the bolts and the headers. Some have dimpled the header to use a socket, I do not want to do this.
TPiS long tubes and TPiS cat-back here. Both were coated by Jet-Hot and dropped-shipped to me. This was ELEVEN years ago. The bright polished look faded on the headers within a year, but still look good - a dull silver/aluminum color. I regularly polish the cat-back to almost like-new condition. Currently have 60,000 miles. HIGHLY recommend the Jet-Hot ceramic coating!
Yeah my choices are down to the TPIS 1 3/4 coated or the LPE 1 5/8 stainless. I know that LPE has had some fitment issues in the past, but they have a new vendor for their headers and now only use 304 stainless. These would seem to last for ever, but I know most people are usng the TPIS and their reputation is excellent.
Jet-Hot has a warranty/guarantee that states, if the buyer is dissatisfied with the coating they will recoat the part for up to three years from the date of purchase (1) time only... no charge!
I'm not completely sure but a few years back it was a no-no to put ceramic coatings, Jet-Hot, HPC Etc. on stainless steel. Stainless has to much thermal expansion/contraction & eventually the coating comes off due to this...
