Default 85 vats

Is this the vats. If so
1. Where is it mounted
2. Are they all the same in each year
3. Are they problematic and should bypass it?

VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft System) was introduced by GM on the 1986 Corvette.

So there must have been some type of alarm system in 85. Its in the factory brochure for 85. Maybe thats what this box is for.

Sure there is. Is it broken? Car won't start if it is. Leave it alone if not

85 had a start(er) interrupt relay behind the Driver Information Center . Just about behind the flashing SECURITY on the DIC.

If the alarm was tripped the relay would prevent starting / cranking only. . If you turned the key on and jumped the starter the car ran fine. Don't ask how I know.. Now it's gone on my 85 now.

The key locks on the doors had a switch to activate / de-activate the alarm. A source of issues if it's an outside car.

Did you bypass that relay. I would like to get rid of that feature.

yes, you can also put a momentary start switch in. - I did when I didn't have time to take the dash apart. Then finally fixed it correctly 3 years later.. This was 6 years ago ( holy crap time flies) , I don't remember exactly what I did. I think I took the light blue wire out of the relay. I do remember jumping the green/white and purple for a test..

from another site : Sorry the '85 does not have the same "vats" system, we don't have a pellet in the key and I don't think the vats bypass kits will work the same way.

I've been looking at my '85 manual diagram, if I get a chance I'll scan it in for you. It looks like you should leave the fuse in place because it goes to the horn but you do need to directly wire the dark green / white striped wire to the purple wire to bypass the relay.

However the light blue wire goes to the starter interrupt control, so if it is seeing voltage that'll disarm the starter.

my 85

It's had to see, but the remote start button is still there on the cruise control bracket. Still hooked up. Makes it easy when doing engine work. Tractor Supply 30 amp momentary push button switch.

Nice looking engine. Did you cut the hood for air flow. If not, how do you deal with the fuel percolation issue.

Yes, I needed 1.5" to get the setup I wanted .

The hood is home made using a real 427 hood scoop, and set up like the 427 L88. A tight fit into a hole in the hood. I also have a 6 speed Richmond - which was not a great choice, should have gone Tremic but It was done 15 years ago.
