have to push the gearshift way up into park to get the starter engaged....any way to disengage the safety on the starter so it starts in any gear? (long story but it would be difficult to access the shifter on the console....I realize it won't be the safest fix...) 85 auto......Paul
There's sufficient information in the 'wiring' diagrams for you to determine a valid workaround.
diagrams didn't come through at first......didn't see them.....problem is that I stupidly recovered the dash/console with that faux finish and the screw holes to access the shifter again will be a pain...just looking for a easier fix....replaced the cable a couple of years ago.....had to be way up into park before it would engage..should have fixed it then, thought that would be a good theft deterrent. it's getting too close now.....

I added the image after the post in an edit. Tried to find the procedure/image on a 'one page' available in an FSM.
that would do it.....seems like it should start in neutral now, but it doesn't....
Are the relays/theft etc. still OE and behind the DIC center of dash? How difficult to get behind there? If they're there and functional it might be able to be done easily. If not, there's likely after-market 'Push-Button' that will be sold together with 'generic' instructions and include an appropriate relay.

About ten years ago my relay failed. For an emergency temporary fix I pulled the cover off the relay and used a small zip tie to hold the contacts closed. I figured it would work until I could find a replacement relay. I never did replace the relay, just always have the transmission in neutral (swapped to a manual) when I start it.
