I'm in the process of building a 383 stroker for my earyl (iron head) '86 C4. I bought a gen 1 block and building it up with the goal of replacing the existing TPI . It will have AFR 1040 heads, 30 lb injectors, Crower cam, roller tappets and lifters, and a TPIS Mini ram. Will the ecm with the stock ship support this build? It should redline at around 6k. In closed loop, will the ecm read the O2 sensor and adjust the fuel pulse to keep the air fuel ratio correct or do I have to change the fuel tables in the chip? Does anyone know who can program 383 tunes for the 1227165 ECM? I can provide data logs. Thanks for your time.
You will need a custom tune made, no the stock chip programming can't compensate, preferably on a dyno with a WB O2 sensor.
PCMforless, others may mail order, mine was done on a dyno by a local shop. More time should be spent on the part throttle tuning and drivability than just WOT.

I recognize that ECM number. Isn't it the one from an '89? Are you swapping to a newer ECM (probably to get more robust functionality)? I'm thinking all who've replied to this thread know how to install a "burnable" PROM and have burned new chips. Not THAT hard if you know your way around a laptop.
That ECM should be able to support your build.
EDIT: So you know....There is a 3-4" long "chip" (PROM) in the 1227165 ECM. It get's yanked. In place of it, most people use one of these "adapters" from Moates....
A chip plugs into the lower left. The long prongs (upper right) plug in where you pull the stock prom. (It's called an adapter because you are burning another type of chip -- and using this "board" to adapt it for the ECM)
This doo-dad burns chips using [free/cheap] software downloadable from the net - like TunerPro/TunerCat. Really, you're only entering numbers in a "spreadsheet-like-format" so your ECM's processor knows how to control your new motor....fuel, air, shift-points, idle, etc...
You may already know you need an ODB1 cable to connect your laptop to your car.

Thanks, I already know how to burn and install chips, and the ecm is the one that came in the car when I bought it. My question on programming is where/what values do I change and what should I change them to? I'm using Tuner pro rt.
What your asking for is what changes need to be made to make your car operate with the components that you have. That is what tuning is all about and it will take many changes to dial in your combination. You will have to study your own tune and make the changes necessary to dial in your car. If you get stuck you can ask a specific question and someone will help but your current question is too general to answer since it requires many changes. You can pay for a tune and that will get you close.

Well thats the magic, thats what you're paying for.
Then make small changes from the new baseline tune, a tuner never gets it perfect the first day. They get the WOT right with the WBO2 but not the rest of the driveabiliy.
If you want to do it all yourself you'll have to read up and study the various guides online. You'll have to adjust the timing and fuel data.

Timing and fuel data. Thanks, that's a start. Now I have to find some online guides. At this point, I'll pay for a base tune with my new setup and then take it from there. I can compare it to the factory bin to get some idea I hope.
