I ordered a refurbed power brake booster and am not looking forward to the job. Most shops in my area dont want to work on corvettes and I dont want to have some place do it that doesnt really want to so Im going to do it. The guy I bought it from said he was a GM mechanic and because GM paid them so little for the job they always came up with ways to cheat. He said I would not need to remove the master cyl from the car. Im not looking forward to a full bleed which can take hours so Id like to do it if possible.
My thoughts are:
Remove drivers seat (Im older and crawling under the dash is going to be tough on me)
Remove what looks to be two nuts holding it on to the inside. And then remove the clip which holds the push rod to the brake pedal assembly
Remove nuts holding the master cyl on to the booster.
SOMEHOW push the master cyl far enough away where I can get the booster out..
The somehow is my concern. Doesn't seem possible?
This is gonna be a real back breaker.. any advice on leaning over?
I guess just some blankets on the fiberglass so I dont scratch it up.
Anyone ever do this? I appreciate the speculation but hope to find someone who has done this job.
Not in a Corvette, but I have replaced boosters without disconnecting the lines from the MC. I would also put some cardboard/blankets down on the floor so you do not get stabbed in the back by the seat studs.
maybe hire a neighbor kid or younger guy to do the under dash work while you supervise.
someone from a Vette club near you might do it for a beer and gas money.
I've done the PB on an 89 and my current 92. It's not too bad. You are better off removing the mc. Gives you a chance to bleed all the old brake fluid out of the system. The most difficult part for me was getting the bolt holes to all line up. Once you remove the PB there is a bracket for the brake pedal to the firewall. It moves slightly making it difficult to get bolts back through. On my 92 I replaced my spark plugs and wires with the booster and mc out. Made getting to the plugs so much easier. I also cleaned a lot of grime with all the lines out of the way.
You can move the MC far enough, but bleeding the brakes every couple years saves a lot of headaches down the road. Take the seat out crawl under with a good light. I'm in my 60s and 6'3" and had no trouble. One of the nuts is a bit of a PITA, but do-able.
