Hello, I recently had my 89 Corvette serviced and looked over at Carters Chevrolet, and they said that my intake manifold is leaking fluid, the price they estimated was $1,515. My fuel gauge has stopped working and the antenna has also stopped retracting but I forgot to ask them to look at them.
My main concern is the gasket, I was wondering what your estimates would be for the projects and how long it would take to complete them.
I know This isn't a lot to go off of and lots of stuff is kind of up in the air, so any help is appreciated
If anyone has any suggestions for mechanics around the Charlotte NC are that would be excellent
$1500 seems a little high, when I worked for Chevy if I remember right the job paid 5.5 hours times that by what their Labor rate is plus a $80 gasket (dealer price) Plus a oil change and coolant and the the ever popular Hazmat, and other supplies I could see $800 to $1000 easily
The job should be worth about half of what you were quoted
I would tend to agree for a non TPI 350. But removing and reinstalling the TPI Erector Set runners, fuel rail, etc. is time consuming with the hidden bolts and multiple gaskets. There's also a risk of dealing with breaking bolts going into the aluminum intake and heads. A tech experienced with the TPI setup could probably do it for less, but this is an old setup now. I don't think the estimate is out of line given today's cost of labor.
If you're handy, and have the gasket sets, RTV, wobble extensions, torque wrench, 1/4" and 3/8" Torx bits it's not a difficult weekend project.
