Default Re-hone?

While rebuilding my L98, right after putting the pistons in, I noticed that I must have gotten something in the wall because there’s a light vertical scratch. It’s deep enough that I can feel it with my fingernail.

Should I re-hone this cylinder? It’s already been honed once and is about .001-002 over (pistons and rings are stock 4.00).

To me, it's too much time/effort/money to pull it down for a redo A-AGAIN. I'd bore it and be done. Consider a 383 if you have the funds.

If it's just that one cylinder, I'd leave it alone. You're not losing much through those scratches.

That's the thing, I don't have the funds, at least not now. I need to just get it on the road.

Thanks, that helps. What’s the risk, what do i look for? Is it at risk of blow by out low compression?

Were the rings deburred before installation? The end of the rings may have a slight edge which then cuts into the wall. I can't see what else you may have gotten in there.

Pull out the piston and see what caused the scratch, you want to eliminate that issue for sure. Once you get the piston out you could try and run a flex hone in the cylinder to knock down any edges on the scratch and then see how it looks.

I will let the experts give an opinion but to me it looks like the hone you did is way too fine. Dan

Yeah, I was thinking that too. Pulled out the pistons, have it another home, checked the ring ends. It’s now at +0.0035 but I think that’s be good enough for normal wear and tear for the next few years or till I do an LS swap.

It's difficult to make judgments just from one picture.

If you didn't deburr the ring ends or cracked a ring it usually would be one or two very straight scratches.

Some of these look deep and they even join together.

I hate to bring up the "C" word, but in the picture they may look like cracks to me?

You can see them better than us, and they sell dye kits to check for cracks in metal parts.

The history of why you rebuilt the engine might help.
