Here is a quote from one of those guys on thirdgen that you posted the link. I had this exact issue with the Ostrich, hence me getting rid of it and got fed up and almost got me into an accident on that.. also, the battery issue that isn't/wasn't readily changeable without a lot of trouble. Maybe Ostrich 2 is better, but unless someone else bought them out, they are out of business.
Yeah I've been noticing recently that when I do an upload to the Ostrich, occasionally the car will go into limp home mode, due to a failed upload. It had been happening more frequently lately... must have been a precursor to outright failure.
I'd have to shut the car down, do another upload to get it running again.
I stand corrected on the P4, my bad. The P4 was a DIY kind of thing that Bob stopped doing from Dynamic EFI I guess because of warranty issues I guess? Now, the EBL is all done by them, for a fee of course, but it is a solid product and can handle anything thrown at it to include NOS.
While you may love the Ostrich, I ran it for a few years and it sucked. It would dump my tune at the most inappropriate time while driving and almost caused an accident having me have to upload the tune again and always had to carry my laptop with me. Also, when the battery gets low, you replace the unit, not the battery. I ditched that for the EBL and NEVER had to carry my laptop with me again. Tuning was easy and very effective. My goal now is 11.99 this winter with the EBL, NA. The EBL P4 Flash is still available for purchase today.
I have both and feel the complete opposite I have the P4 that I believe is no longer an option I ran faster with the original 8D set up maybe because I'm more accustomed to 8D as there is loads of tuning info from decades and multiple users. With the EBL it felt like I was starting from scratch with almost every parameter and you also need a laptop to tune with EBL, if I remember correctly the EBL required the car to be off while with ostrich you can flash while car is running, with Super AUJP release there is very little need to swap to a different ECU now
Regardless if on a budget all you really need is a data log cable 50-60 bucks, a burner $100-140 and the g1 adapter 40-60 bucks along with the free software to tune these cars the ostrich's purpose was to tune them faster I would not pay the $400 that people are selling used ones now considering there original price was around 200
