I pulled knock sensors in order to drain coolant. They had not malfunction before and I don’t know if I can put them back or if they should be replaced with new ones simply because they were removed. Also, does anyone know the torque specifications for a knock sensor? They are a pain for big guy to get to, and I don’t want to do this again.
Absolutely! No sense putting old stuff back in, especially when connections may be rusted, plastics brittle, and now possibly contaminated after removal.
I believe 14 ft lbs for knock sensors according to my 90 FSM
I recently refreshed my 383 and put in a new knock sensor and had all sorts of false knock
ended up going back to the old one
on another occasion a brand new knock sensor died in 10 minutes
make sure you get AC Delco knock sensor your chances are better than one of the cheap ones.
The ones you pulled should have a good amount of crud on the tips. I have replace a ton of stuff on my 95, knocks included. Working on my 93 and prices have certainly gone up. Thankful suppliers are still selling oem or better stuff.
I've had the originals out of mine several times, and have always spun them right back in after coolant drain was completed. Never saw a good reason to replace them. YMMV.
