Hello everyone, My 89 is running great. Having said that. Once the car is running for a while. The oil pressure will drop to almost zero at idle. The car is not knocking. I changed the oil pressure switch once. I am willing to change it again. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on.
My 84 always read 9 psi at idle. I finally checked the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, The OP was 20 at idle. But, the car would shut if I didn't rev the engine to keep the gauge reading above 10 psi.
I really do not think the OP in the 89 is going to 4 psi. But, that's what the gauge is saying. The real problem is the car is a manual so I have to change the way I stop the car. Brake with my left and feed a little gas with right. If anyone has asuggestion. please make it.
Thank you
I think the pressure is low and you may want to verify why in the near future. Now the shutting off, what's your minimum idle like and have ever cleaned your throttle plates.
If you're idle is so low that you need to heel/toe the pedal you my need to check the idle you're problem may be related
When I start the car the oil pressure is 50 plus psi. After it gets to operating temperature about 185 the oil pressure at idle starts to drop. After about 20 minutes the oil pressure at idle 800 rpm is dropping below 10 psi. It has READ as low as 6 psi for a brief moment. My problem is not that I think the oil pressure is that low. It's that the car will shut when the oil pressure reads 4 psi for a couple of seconds. Being it is a manual transmission I have to hold the brake with my left foot and feather the gas to keep the oil pressure up. A real PIA.
Like I said on my 84 I had a similar problem. It would shut off below 10 psi. I connected a mechanical gauge to check the oil pressure. The idle oil pressure was 20 psi. But, the gauge read 10/9. I was hopping someone had an idea of what is going on.
Thank you
I have a question, when you turn the key on to start the car can you hear your fuel pump running?
As far as oil pressure goes put a mechanical gauge on the car and verify actual oil pressure. Only after that is done can you come up with a plan to address the issue.
