Default distributor gear

I’ve bought a new sbc engine to replace my l98 in my 91 corvette and the new cam is compatible with melonized gears. What I’ve found is that the stock distributor uses a melonized gear, that should be compatible with the new camshaft. Is that correct. The engine is 250k km now, should I buy a new gear anyway?

It is compatible but you should buy a new gear with all those miles.

With 250,000 miles you might consider having distributor refurbished. Having shaft checked for wear, replace bushings, gear, pick up coil, and icm. Cap, rotor, wires, and spark plugs fall under regular maintenance. Some cam manufacturers will recommend a certain distributor gear along with it's part number,. If in doubt call cam help line.

Thank you. It’s 155k miles. I’ll try to buy a new one soon, but I’m installing the old one for now if I find it in acceptable condition.
