Default Front Swaybar Removal

Is there an easy way to remove the front Swaybar on my 89 Corvette? I have a new 35mm Van Steel front Swaybar to install. It looks like the fan or power steering cooler needs to be removed however, I don’t find anything in the factory service manual on the front Swaybar removal.

Well, I'll be upfront with you and admit my post here won't exactly answer your question. I pulled the front sway bar off an '89 in a junkyard a few weeks ago. I did all the work from underneath and never had to take a serious look from on-top, so I can't definitively tell you that a prior junker didn't remove some parts/obstacles beforehand.

If you can, let us know how things go.

How the heck did it come out? I don’t have the room to bring it down anymore than where it’s currently at. I’m not sure if it can be slid out one side or the other without removing a wheel. Let me know how you pulled it out. It may help me with mine. Thanks!

I turned the wheel all the way to one side. Whoever the previous owner was put some funky locking lug nuts on it, so that was my only option. Pulling a wheel would have made it a bunch easier to unbolt the links and slide the bar out.

Tell me more!

is it solid (heavy) or hollow (lighter)?

also; what bushings do you use with this?

Since I’m in the garage I pulled the wheels & then got sidetracked cleaning her some. Ok, back to work!

The swaybar slides out one side & I pulled it out the right side. I’m not quite sure how I got the new swaybar through but I did have the lever arm(s) pointed down. At first the bar came to a stop sliding it across to the driver’s side & didn’t look like it would go further but with some twisting it went. The bar came with a nice bubble wrapped cover which I put back on the new bar to protect it when installing it.

Getting the bottom link in the lower control arm removed is proving challenging. Any suggestions would be great as the two sockets & c-clamp is not quite working due to the angle of the outside of the arm.

Can you put some weight on the wheels/A-arms to get them further up? That always made life easier for me to attach the links.

Removing the bushings in the front A-arms was a bit of a challenge. It was similar to pulling valve guides on an old flathead engine. Threaded Rod different socket sizes, nuts, washers, etc. First I used the threaded rod through the middle of the bushing with the long nut & pushed the metal inner sleeve out towards the front. Next I used a socket to push the rubber bushing out, again towards the front of the car. Finally the outer most aluminum sleeve, here I used a hacksaw blade & tried to cut just through the sleeve then another socket to tap on the rear side & she came out. Here are a couple photos. Now I can begin the assembly.

Hey sorry, somehow I misread your previous post and didn't understand that you were trying to remove the link bushing. Glad to see you got it squared away.

Thanks. I also have the Vansteel suspension and will be doing that this winter.
