1988 Stalling while driving
A few days ago he had a hard time starting it and getting it to stay running, but he let it warm up and took it up the street and it was fine. The next day we took it out and at the end of our street, the low coolant light came on. We stopped and added some coolant and then drove it to town which was about 45 minutes and it was all good.
When we went to take it home, it started up fine and then we stopped for gas and it wouldn't start again. My husband was able to get it running and we drove for about 30 minutes, then when we went to turn at a light the engine cut out. He was able to restart it, but it happened a few more times usually when he was braking or going around a turn. Each time it would cut off, the low coolant light would come on followed by the service engine soon light. It looked like it was smoking a little under the hood but we were able to get home.
The next day it started up fine and he test drove it for about 15 minutes and when he got back the engine was hissing. Temperature was at about 220.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Is it just overheating? It doesn't seem to have any signs of a head gasket other than the possible overheating.
