I need help please!!! I have 86' z51 I just bought from someone who liked to touch every wire that GM made, so I bought it not running but would turn over. Got it home got to looking at it and seem that intake was put back together with zip ties? Sounded like a vacuum up there!! Anyways I replaced all gaskets all injectors, spark plugs, wires, oil/filter,new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new starter, new battery. The old alt was bad so I replaced it also and the car started right up and ran like a rapped ape!! But it was throwing the security light from day one but didn't give me any problems until now I think. I say that because I idk if security has anything to do with problem. So it was driving fine then just stopped. I went to get in one day and turn the key, All I hear is antenna and solenoid click, all lights work, dash good, asks good but won't e enough turn over??? I need help asap it's my everyday driver. Thank u.
If all you hear is the solenoid click then my first guesses are that either your new starter failed, or your engine is locked up, or you have a dead battery, or a bad connection.
Ok so the motor is definitely not locked up, it'll turn over if I jump down there and hit the solenoid with screw driver but won't start just turns over, and over. I'm getting power to my big wire on solenoid with power off and power to the little wire with power on? Sounds like starter is not bad either bc it'll engage as I said earlier, manually. As for connection I've traced ground wire to engine block and all good, no corrosion on batt terms or batt, and battery is a week old and reads 12.5 or 12.7 on dash but will drain when trying to start, but only to 12.4 or 12.3 then charge itself back to 12.5. So idk if Batts good but looks like it is. So that brought me back to the VATS system. I'm not an expert with wiring but know enough to trouble shoot so I found plug on orange wire under dash that's attached to VATS system and traced it back a little and find out that the previous owner had already put a resistor in line with VATS to bypass system. Now I'm really stumped and am thinking that you are correct about your answers. I'm headed back to garage it's 2:44 am here in ocala florida, I'm just to curious to stop!!!!! Thx for your help!!
