Default Anyone fixed their loose windows?

Hey guys-

Just curious if anyone with loose windows has been able to fix them. When I shut my driver door, the window makes a terrible noise at anything less than fully up.

Does the window regulator just get worn out, allowing the window to flop around? My passenger side does not do this, or atleast not nearly as bad (it has been so long since I've driving it, I can't remember!).

The door panel on the driver side has also seperated from the door up by the window, so I am sure not having that support contributes.

I would love to hear some ideas!

Mike

Im not really sure, but is it possible the little bumpers in the door have loosened up a bit. My driver side just recently started to do this, an have not had time to check it out.. Thats what i plan to do.. If im not mistaken, there is two bumpers that the windows slides on when going up an down..

I have messed with those and the results where not that great. I could get rid of most of the window clunk, but at that point, the window motor would have to really work to raise the window. I did not want to cook the window motor, so I just backed off a bit. I think there has to be something in the door that needs to be replaced because the passenger side is fine, which does not get used very often.

Insane! In my 86 I have an identical problem. Completely identical! I was thinking it was bumpers if they're in there, but I geuss that didn't work out for you, my window also has worked fine so far minus the sound when closing it. As for the loose trim type piece next to the rear of the window, that is also loose on mine. Hopefully someone can help us fix it! Good luck to us all!

yesterday i replaced the outer window seals on my 86 coupe. while i had the door panels off greased up the power window guide, rackand ribbon. after installing the new seals i adjusted the anti-rattle pads to just make contact to the glasss(window down) and relaced door panel.everthing is tight, greased and working great!!!! on the outer window seals there are two carpeted pads for the window to ride against, and the two carpeted anti-rattle pads..these four pads can where out in time. maybe replacing one or both sets will cure your problem. good luck!!

I did most everything that Dankai did and it improved the situation. I also messed around with the regulator adjustments which ultimately helped, but needed a couple of attempts to get it right. Before I got it right, the window started to scrape against something metallic and got scratched, so be careful if you try this adjustment. While in there, I noticed that the felt was becomming unglued from the bumper brackets - I recommend that those be replaced when you go in there to do any other fixes.

My door panel was also not staying attached, no matter how many times I took it off and carefully re-installed it. I finally used a bead RTV along the top edge, and that has been holding since last October.

My 87 is also the exat same. Just this week the black trim piece on top broke even more and now lops almost freely of the broken door pannel that wont stay hooked. Its a mess and not cheap at all. My window also sounds like crap-- moves about 2 inches either way if it's hal way up. Hopefully when i look into finding some bumpers, that will fix it.

Perhaps I should replace all my bumpers... Half of them are missing their felt. One of them was so full of crap, it was scratching my window really bad, so I just pulled the felt off and let the rubber rub instead.

As for the door panel not wanting to stay in place, in my case, the ribs which support the "grove" which engages the "tounge" of the door itself has broken along a seam (poor molding). This I believe is what causes 90% of the 90-96 door panel problems (maybe even all C4's if they are of the same design internally). Maybe once I fix the rattling, I will put down some RTV to keep it in place.

I got to thinking and Im thinking maybe I should pull of my door pannel-- its cracked as hell behind it and especially along the top. I could lay a strip or fiberglass along each of these cracks to kindof put them back together. On the top I could make that strong again, and then re-drill the holes "in the new fiberglass" where I still have a few studs on the trim piece to mount it. With the rest of the trim piece (most of the studs have broken of flush) I could either stik it to my newly stonger pannel with 3M double side tape or some good glue. I hate the C4 door pannels-- why did they do that crap in crappy plastic? :mad . Any thoughts please?

I have to add my .02 now since I've got my doors apart again....
The new trim pieces that attach to the top of the door panels now have metal threaded studs instead of plastic! Helps a lot. However if the door panel itself is already cracked and warped....oh well. I found the best price on new door panels at the Last Detail.
There was a "fix" available from the factory-but no longer available or even listed....basiclly an L bracket that attachs to the top of the door panel and then hooks over the door to hold it in place. If your door panels are just warped a bit you can keep them on tight by making up a couple of similar brackets for each door. By keeping the door panel tight it helps a lot with the window rattles....
Also if one window rattles more than the other.....like mine did....check to make sure the bottom bolts that hold the crank mechanism in didn't fall out!

I vaguely remember reading about an enhancement or "fix" that the factory did on cars in a model year newer than my 1990. Maybe another forum member can chime in...

My drivers window rocks front to rear when it is partially down. I will be tearing into it soon to replace the door lock cylinder, so I am going to look at this also. I have my passenger side completely out now, so I will compare the two and hopefully come up with a solution.

And I was thinking I was the only one with this problem. And it also is real embarrassing to when you have to shut the door when there is people around. It makes it sound like your car is a piece of sh-t. :nonod: I just put new weather stripping on, so now I really have to slam it. I hope someone come up with some good ideas

Petros,

The bumpers are called "anti-rattle cushions", I've seen them in the Mid-America catalog for $10/ea. They're probably cheaper from one of the supporting members.

PS Is your sig pic taken in syosset or greece

now that I look at it again, it can't be syosset. long island doesn't have mountains.

I had tracked down these bumpers before and I think Jeff Kopp had them for about 4 $ ea. Ive had it with that crappy door pannel. Since anything short of about 400$ wont fix it.. heres my idea. Take the door pannel off and fix all the craks in the pannel itself with either CA glue and "Zip kicker", 2 part epoxy, or a single layer of fiberglass. Then strengthen/ rebuild the top part that hooks the door with glass. Then glue back down or double side 3M tape the trim strip where it has broken the studs off. Any thoughts. I dont particularly like the idea of putting more stuf "glass/glue etc.) into the door but right now if i did a nice job on it, Its looking like a much bettter option than 400$ (whih i dont have) or putting up with it (which bothers me every time i get in or out).

My door panel also has the cracked ribs. The previous owner tried to glue them back together with epoxy, but it didn't last. I don't believe that CA will work well either. When I take the door apart to replace the window, I'm going to try to repair/reinforce it with strips of glass cloth soaked in epoxy.

The trick is going to be holding the panel the way it is supposed to be while the glass dries. Have you thought about what to do about that? I am sure it would be simple, just something I have not put a lot of thought into as of yet. Perhaps gluing them with some epoxy or CA to keep the ribs where they are supposed to be, then put fiberglass over that...

I spent a bunch more time inside the doors today......putting 6.5 speakers in....also figured out that $#%^&% window rattle!
When the window is partway down it will actually shake enough (when slammed shut) to rattle off the rib on the inside door skin. There are originally foam strips running up and down on the inside door skin that pads the window when it's partially down, and they get compacted or fall off.
After the new "bumper pads" at the top and then thicker foam strips and more of them....no more rattle!!!!
