Default Early Vs late Racks ?

We know the late 88+ front suspensions are a wider track width but what about the Steering Racks? Are the Tie Rods the only difference? In other words, can they be swapped from one to the other?

Not sure about year to year but I do know there is a difference in Z51 vs non Z51.

The general consensus seems to be that you can swap the inner tie rods from one to the other to make them fit either BUT there have been instances where people say that they haven't been able to accomplish that. No one that's had issues ever seems to complete the thread to explain their issue. For many years I thought that there was actually maybe various actual 'rack' used in the assembly.

Here's the most recent thread where someone said they had issues but never came back to finish the thread:

I am running a 91 rack on my 86. The only differences are the length of the inner tie rods, other than that it went right in.
