I have replaced 2 alternators on this corvette, problem is they keep breaking on bottom where cast aluminum is.one piece stays with bolt and the rest is just held on by top bolt.anty suggestions what could be causing this to happen. Please let me know if anyone else has had this issue also, and what was the fix
Do you have the Alt brace installed? It goes from the Alt to the manifold. I don't have a picture.
What he said, now in addition check belt alignment and make sure the belt isn't bouncing to much. A bad AC compressor can send shock loads through the system and snap weakest link
I would assume twisting is the cause, but since I have had no brace for 18 years and no issues, it may deeper than that. Mind you, I don’t have any of the smog crap on mine, and the top of alt is mounted to a 10mm thick plate aluminum that also holds my smog delete pulley.
If the alternator is mounted correctly utilizing everything in this image I don't rcall anyone ever complaining about the issue you mention. Are you using a correct alternator?
#7 in this image might be a '85 only one style, '86+ would be similar. #8 is I believe likely an '85 only. There are several '87 owners here that could certainly confirm. Have you eliminated any of the air pump etc?
