Default [Pics]: Head repairs so far.

Click all pics for full size.

So we started with this....

Then I got it welded....

Then we got them milled.....

This is what the original sparkplug area should look like....

And here is what the repaired one looks like. Pretty damn good I think.

After my dad cleaned the weld up...

Scorp,
Looks real good as far as weld, and mill go.
What caused this in the first place?
What style head?

While reinstalling my intake some sort of foreign material got into the manifold and was sucked into #6. Those are the GM D-Port 113 casting heads.

How was that repair made?

Why does it appear like the orginal head casting and the repair material have a major crack between them, is it the picture?

Welding Aluminum

It is just the picture. There is a slight overhang of new material causing a shadow.

I hope the machine shop isn't done decking the heads...you still have a lot of pitting in the squish area of the head.

Please do not take this the wrong way because it just may be the pictures, but I would not use that head. I have seen repairs before on aluminum and that does not look kosher. I think you might me asking for more problems. I don't mean to offend.

I agree... the heads look a whole lot better than the before pics, but the weld just don't look that stable to me...

Scorp, how much lip - unevenness - gap does it take to get detonation problems? That would worry me, perhaps unnecessarly. Do you think that area where the weld meets the orginal casting needs to be cleaned up a little?

I'm such a worrier.

Pete

I hope you didn't pay for it yet, because it looks like they just got started.

I have had aluminum heads repaired twice, once from worse than that and you couldnt even tell it was ever damaged after they were done.

That repair looks unacceptable. Hate to have to put it this way, but, that repair job looks totally like S H ! T

I admit the picture makes it look pretty junky. It is very hard to take a picture of metal using a flash. I'll try to get some better shots tomorrow as it really is a lot better in person.

Here you go guys, I think you'll like this better. I was sitting here and my dad goes "Hey come check this out, I just finished cleaning up your head." Anyways... he said he was bored and wanted to finish cleaning it up.

The welding looks ok now that it's been cleaned up, but i would still take a second look at the deck of the head. Even after the milling, it's very badly pitted.
