Is there a way to adjust clearance between ring and pinion? Is there a crush washer on these rear ends? The reason i ask is i have play between drive shaft and tire. Just relaced two u-joints in half shaft and that removed some but i can still see and feel free play. Thanks for any info!!!
There's supposed to be some play when you turn the driveshaft and the wheels aren't moving. The play is in the ring and pinion gears, and it's normal. Why are you worried about this - are you having a problem with the car?
Backlash between the ring and pinion gears is .001 and is controlled by spacers on the carrier. The crush washer on the pinion is for setting the bearing preload on the pinion bearings. If you have a lot of miles on the differential you will have a wear pattern on the ring gear and if you reshim it to .001, you might have a noisy differential afterward.
jfb said you might have noisy rear if you reset the ring and pinion. You WILL have noise and it will sound like a rock crusher. Been there done that and the gears had only about 20K miles on them, not in a Corvette, but principle would be the same.
