I have just put in my new cam and is about to install the cover.
Right now I support the engine with a jack and a pice of wood under the oil pan ( the tranny is out ).Now I must take off the oil pan in order to fit the oilgasget to the cover ( i got the 1 piece type seal ). Is it ok to jack the engine under the FW? Got any tips? Or can I just let the engine "hang" ?
As long as there is no transmission on it, and both motor mounts are torqued to spec, you can let it hang. Just bring it down slowly and it will rest comfortable on it's own. On LT1's, just watch the oil pressure sensor on the top rear of the intake. It may hit the firwall and break off. Ask me how I know this  There may be similar sensors on the back of an L98, but I am not sure.
1) Rest a jack-stand under the flywheel (put a board on it first) or....
2) Support the rear of the engine with a 2x4 wedged up inside the upper bellhousing lip. Use a rope to keep the back from slipping out while you are working on the pan gasket. I did this on mine last time I was working on it. I tied the bottom of the board to the jackstands that the car was sitting on (if they went somewher with 3000+ lbs. on them then I would be in REALLY big trouble). Just make sure you cut the end of the board so that it sits flat on the ground.
I put a board onto the jack pad and lifted from the bottom of the ZF. Leave the nuts about 3 threads on the motor mount bolts to avoid lifting higher than necessary. No problems.
