To all of you who have built motors, what kind a break in schedule did you use? I fired up my 383 this evening. Sounds sweet!! Same formula as Ski and his 406. What do you engine builders think. Thanks for the help.
500mi, varying rpm but keeping it below 4K, change oil (using dino oil)
another 500-1000mi, change oil (dino)
At 1500mi change over to what you want to use
I can agree with Vader86's post. Varying load (cylinder pressure) is the way to go as long as its not in the extreme.
With a proper hone job the rings should be seated within about 20 minutes of run time. But I still wouldn't bang on it until I saw around 500 miles of "75% strength" driving style. I consider this a time to evaluate the build and look for problems.
Valves adjusted? Check. Timing set? Check. Oil pressure ok? Check. Coolant topped off? Check. LET 'ER EAT!!! Have you ever seen a new engine put on a dyno? Did they run it(break it in) to the equivelant of 500 miles? NOT. I've never had any problems with breaking them in the way they are going to be driven. I've built engine for stock everyday drivers to circle track racing, boat racing, up to blown drag race engines and have not had any problems yet. Go to your local circle track and ask the guys how many laps/miles are on thier engines and how do they last? If it pukes right away, it would of no matter how you break it in. I do agree with changing the oil and filter at around 500 miles.
