I have a 92 LT1 and am going to replace the stock valve covers with polished aluminum ones. I know on the left bank I will need to remove the alternator and bracket to gain access for removal but on the right side the SM calls for removing the fuel rail and AIR hose to remove the cover. For those of you who have changed these is it necessary to remove all that stuff on the right? Also, what gaskets would you recommend?
Thanks.
The egr pipe will most likely prevent you from removing the cover. To remove the pipe, you need to unbolt it from the back of the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold. To get to the bolts on the back of the intake manifold, you will want to move the fuel rails (just unbolt them and lay them on towels on the windshield, there's no need to disconnect the fuel lines or anything, it's a five minute job). There's also a bracket holding it in place which is bolted to the back of the cylinder head, I ended up cutting the bracket off, couldn't for the life of me get to that bolt.
I to have a 92 Lt1, there is no need to remove the fuel rails. I have had my covers off 3 times in the last 3 weeks (installed GMPP 1.6RR's and LT4 springs). Losen the bolts on the plate on the back of the intake manifold then
losen the bolt on the back of the head (14mm I think). Undo EGR pipe from exhaust manifold. Pull pipe up and tie off to fuel lines with a piece of wire.
I also the fuel rail cover studs to hold the injector harness up out of the way.
The clearance is tite but it should come off with some wiggling.
Hopefully your new covers will have a gasket channel like the stock vc's do.
If not, you may have to tack the gasket to the cover with rtv (use GM gaskets).
