Hey all,
Thought maybe someone out there could possibly help me out.
I have what you would call a hesitation just from idle.
If I stomp on it from idle it bogs down(hesitates)then catches back up, But if I ease the pedal down to maybe raise the rpms to 700-900 then stomp on it its fine.
I had programmed the car with the hypertech programmer a month ago, but today I brought it back to stock to see if it would help, and actually it seems worse(guessing because my idle rpms are lower).
I was thinking maybe bad gas(acts like it somewhat)
Maybe a fuel pump going out.
or plugs and wires.
It only does it from an idle state and thats what is confusing me.
any help would be appreciated
Thx
It sounds like a fuel pump going south...
I say always start with the easy things to replace.. A Fuel pump is usually pretty cheap, and cna be replaced even by a non professional within an hour, or if you are like me, someone who had NO idea how to do it, took 2 hours and I did it in my driveway 2 years ago..
My symptoms were during driving it was 'ok', but once I got to idle at a stop, it wanted to stall. I had to drive with brake and gas at the same time..
It idles perfectly fine, never tries to die at all. I could sit all day at idle and it never miss(that I can hear or feel) its just when I punch it from idle it bogs down.
Still maybe the fuel pump?
Thx for the replies
as far as I can tell the wires are fine(look like the original wires but not anywhere near the headers or melted).
Looks like its time for some Plugs and wires anyways so im gonna get that done regardless if its the problem or not.
then next the fuel pump, and filter I guess
First things first, I took it in and right off they found a Vacuum leak at the little elbow looking hose, it was dry rotting and coming apart, lmao gonna take 4 days to get one here.
Not sure if it will fix the problem, but sure couldnt have been helping none.
They checked the plugs and wires and all that looked good.
opti spilled from his lips if this doesnt fix it, but hes pretty sure it will.
Just went thought the same problem on my 86. Drove me nuts. Here's the low cost approach:
1) Dump bottle of dry gas into to fuel tank to remove water.
- Test Car - If Not fixed:
2) Change Fuel Filter
- Test Car - If Not fixed:
3) Check inside distributor cap for any abnormal firing signs. Replace cap & rotor
- Test Car - If Not fixed:
3) Check all spark plug wires. Give em the "wiggle test". Wiggle the wires while car is running. (Be careful !)
- Test Car - If Not fixed:
4) Replace any defective or suspicious wire
- Test Car - If Not fixed:
5) Replace plugs
- Test Car - If Not fixed:
Sell car on Ebay for big bucks! Or take it to a professional mechanic.
Steps 1-4 will cost you ~ $75 and if you haven't replaced those things in a while, you should anyway.
Mine was fixed on step 4, but I did the plugs anyway. Had bad gas, filter & wire :(
Car has 75,000 on it(I only have had car for the last 5,000 miles), but the Chevrolet guy said the wires and plugs had been changed not to long ago and looked great.
What Ive done so far............
Returned back to stock with hypertech programmer
Added water remover to tank
Plug wires checked
Plugs checked
They found a vacuum leak(wires, plugs, and vacuum leak done by a Chevrolet dealership)
Hose is costing me 5.00 but gonna take 4 days to get here.
If not the vacuum leak then they say opti, but before they do that they WILL be changing the Plug wires, plugs, and the fuel filter if it needs it or not because I said so!
They also rigged the hose so I could get home, then when I got home I rigged it better, seems to me it helped alot, but that could be wishful thinking.
If its the opti i dont have a problem paying for it(probably due), just dont want to pay for an opti only to find out it was a fuel pump!
not sure if on same opti, I only have had the car for 5,000 miles and can't contact the seller anymore to find out.
Wasnt one of the things he mentioned as being done to the car though.
