Re: Break upgrade (edsalinas)

:iagree: The C5 front brakes are a significant improvement and the most cost effective way to go IMHO.
You can leave the rear brakes alone, the only difference with the c5 is thicker roters...if you are heavy auto Xing, you may want this.
You will have to change to 17" wheels.
Other mods involving stock brake sizes are probably purely cosmetic and not worth the $$$ IMHO
Just thought of something I had overlooked...I think the 88 and up dual piston front calipers will fit your car as a bolt on and no wheel change required.
I have a like new set of these with new roters and ceramic pads if you are interested...e mail me
The grand sport upgrade would be better than stock, but the C-5 would probably be the way to go. Either way check with Jeff Kopp he will have good prices.
C5 brakes are the best way to go. VBP offers several brake upgrades. They offer the C4 Grand sport and C5 among others. The C5 upgrade from them is about $300 more than it should be. Go to http://www.electro-dynamics.com and superior chevrolet and you will get the parts the cheapest. Both upgrades require that you have 17" rims to fit the calipers and rotors. Since the '84 had 16", you'll have to change the rims. I'd get the 5 spoke GS style as they fit the C5 and look "correct" for the car. The sawblades you can probably pick up cheap on Ebay but they require a wheel spacer to fit C5 brakes.
The VBP C5 is $995. I did mine for under $700. The GS brakes are not nearly as good an upgrade but cost about $300. Hope this helps.

Re: Break upgrade (nopain1984)
I Just got some DBA brake rotors in for the C4
They are the 13" x 28mm thick.
We have both front and rear in Drilled and Slotted.
I do not have a photo yet, since they just came in, but they look just like the C5 rotors that I import. I only got a a small number in, just to see what the response was. they are $499 per set, Corvette forum Special price.
thanks
JMHO, but what do you plan to do with your Vette? Why are you upgrading? Your brake upgrade should be based upon needs. If you're going to be building a competitive road racer, brake needs are different than a competitive autocrosser. A spirited street driver will have still different needs. Looks is another thing altogether.
Hmm..that C5 front brake upgrade is starting to look better and better...but you still have the problem of the crappy looking stock REAR brake calipers...no way to change those out :(

The rears are just fine. Take a look

Threw in a Rippie proportining valve spring in master cylinder. Brakes works great. BTW, used G2 brake paint for calipers and caliper brackets.

The J55 big brake conversion requires an additional bracket to bolt the caliper bracket to (similar to the C5 upgrade). The original 16" wheels won't fit over the calipers either.
The bottom line... the amount of work, mods to do the J55 is about the same as the C5 upgrade. The C5 brakes are better so even if they are more expense, if you are going to use your car for track events, do the C5 upgrade.

And replacement rotors are cheaper on C5. Its the one time mounting brackets that make it cost more. The rest is comparably priced, pads, calipers, etc. :iagree:
Lou, Would you reccomend a rotor upgrade in the front for roadracing? It seems whenever I'm doing over 90mph and get on the brakes it leaves a blueish heat spot on my rotor. Louis said that is normal but If I'm planning on hitting the open track this year would it be wise to upgrade to a better rotor? I was thinking about a crossdrilled brembo, but how to DBA's compare in price and performance? Thanks
