Tell me again about opti going bad. I'm pretty sure mine crapped out today, gonna have a friend come over and check it out but in the mean time...
I was driving and it felt like I had a loss of power or fuel for a split second, then it happened again about 10 secs later. The frequency increased so I pulled over to check. No splatters on the underside of the hood and the water pump didn't appear to be weeping so I got back in and started for the highway when it started to get worse and worse. After that I called my homie qblue92 and he said it sounds like Opti.
BTW, in 2 years it has always felt like that when I ran the air and heat and I asked someone about it and they said maybe it was the AC cycling on and off. Perhaps the Opti unit was gradually wearing out and this is not from the water pump? Is that possible? I'm a girlie girl so I'm not even sure this is how all this works so enlighten me. :)
:leaving: I haven't cleaned under the hood since before I left my ex so it definatly was nothing I did!! We had a bad bad rain storm last night and the car is outside under an overhang now. Is that possible that it could have done it? It was fine this morning when I drove 3 miles to work. Left work drove about 6 miles and it started.
 ok, no major problems putting that into the 93? I wonder if my insurance would cover it? My 85 got a new motor in 1989 when the previous owner sucked up water in the intake during a bad storm in a dip in the road.
As to whether insurance will cover it, maybe but i doubt it. If you sweet talk the insurance agent you might get lucky ;)
Never heard of anybody getting it covered by insurance though.
Theres some small modifications to make with the new opti, but otherwise its the same thing. I think theres a vacuum line you need to make, and maybe some slightly different way that it bolts in, but nothing harder than just replacing the sucker.
read this, or give it to the mechanic http://gab328.tripod.com/Car_mechani.../opti_fix.html
If it's just rain that is causing a problem, it may dry out. But take this as a warning that good things are NOT on the way.
Not likely that insurance will cover it. This is a pretty well known "normal wear and tear" item, unless you have less than say 15K miles and it's less than a year old.
Bite the bullet, order an opti from Jeff Kopp (think hard about a water pump or Meziere, as well) and read the Vette Fever article about venting the older opti.
A late model Opti will require a new timing chain cover and some futzing with the cam pin. But it is a better device and it is cheaper.
Besure to "reseal" your new opti with some hi-temp RTV.
Oh well, it was at least a thought to ponder. Anyway, I'm sure I must have that issue of CF so I'll take that to the mechanic. I had already decided I would get a water pump too while it was apart and of course I'm going to order it from Jeff and Company
BTW anyone got an idear how much the opti will set me back?...
Labor (Northern Calif) is $325 to replace opti. As you are aware, that would include labor for the water pump as you need to remove the pump to remove the opti.
Jenn, the first time my waterpump crapped out, I decided to replace the opti at the same time. Due to my work schedule, I dropped it at the dealer and had them do everything. Got a lifetime warranty on everything, never have to pay for it again.
I'll email you something later which may or may not be something you want to do.
When my water pump blew out last fall it took the opti with it...when I had it towed to my mechanic, lo and behold, he turns out to be the guy who invented the procedure and wrote the article on venting the opti for corvette fever...who knew !...he sells the kit to do it, as well....his name is Chris Petris, he owns Corvette Clinic...phone is 407-323-7804...good luck
Take a look at this: http://www.corvetteclinicinc.com Look under C-4 solutions and find the Opti-spark options Chris has. I just had my 92 opti-spark vented by him and it was a good job. So, buy your opti and send it to Chris for venting and then give it to your mechanic along with the instructions.
yeah the rainstorm could have done it, if the moist air got in there then itd definitely cause it to miss once it warmed up and condensed
does sound like an Opti, might as well replace the WP too
Yep this is what it did! It was fine when it sat for a couple hours and my friend came over to look at it. We drove around for about 5 miles and fine. Started back toward home and it was all warm and it started doing it again and BAD!
Sorry to hear about your possible Opti troubles. Both the water pump and Opti crapped out on my Ruby at only 25,000 miles. :cuss Pretty sad. When the water pump was removed it was obvious that the vast majority of the bearings were gone and it had been leaking onto the Opti.
Symptoms were about the same. Loss of power, bucking, sputtering, shaking like a wet dog....not a pretty sight. :nonod:
I ordered both my water pump and Opti from Jeff Kopp. My local dealer wanted over $600.00 for a new Opti  . The water pump that I received was brand new and actually included a brand new thermostat as well. I opted for the non-vented (original) style Opti and I believe the cost was about $325.00.
Good luck with it, it can be a frustrating and expensive situation.
