Default To change half shaft u-joints...

I know I need to disconnect the spring from the spindle, but when re-installing the spring, is there only one way it can go on, or do I need to count the number of turns it takes to get the castle nut off and turn it back on the same number of turns to resinstall. I'm wondering about changing the ride height when resintalling the spring...

Thanks,
Jay

take a look at my tech tip in the tech tips section. IT will show you what you need to do roughly. I counted the threads, but found out it was just all the way up, you can count them just to make sure.

:iagree: You tighten it all the way up so the cotter pin slips through the castle nut.

I found it easier to use a ruler. I measured from the bottom of the spring-I bolt to the bottom of the castle nut. When I reinstalled the spring, I tightened the nut to the measured distance. I felt I could have to easily miscounted the # of threads.

Count threads or measure the bolts, either way will work. It was kind of wasted effort on my part because I had to replace the rear spring cushions, the originals were all screwed up and I put prothane back in instead of rubber.

:iagree: as I did this as well. If it is a stock bolt and nut then just turn it until you get to the cotter pin hole in the bolt.

Thanks all. They were the stock bolts and I just tightened the nut back up til it snugged and reinstalled the cotter pin.

Believe it or not, the hardest part of the whole job was removeing the half shaft itself after the u-joint caps and stub shafts had rusted together! :banghead:

According to the factory service manual, you tighten the nut until you can install the cotter pin.

I count the # of threads, this makes it sit the same height as before.
