Hate to interrupt the forum with a comfort question, but has anyone replaced or upgraded their air conditioning and how much did it cost. In my 88 C4 the air has not been used for quite a while and now it is dead. The compressor doesn't even turn and I think it was leaking for some time. Had to keep adding R12 (!@#$%^&*) to the system. Any help or advice will be appreciated.

All systems leak - good ones less than a 1/2 ounce annually, but they still leak. Vettes & GM in particular usually leak at the shaft seal (you'll see compressor oil above the compressor on the hood), or at the evaporator (frost on the windshield is a dead giveaway). You could also have a hole in the condensor, but thats usually a pretty fast leak. Pull the shroud and check between the radiator & the condensor for oil streaks. Refigerent is a matter of choice. The referenced link appears to have been written by a dealer, which seemingly boast the socalled "dropins" the most. For full particulars, go to http://www.epa.gov Most a/c shops will turn down your business if you use anything other than R12 or R134 as they don't have the required equipment to recover anything other than these two refigerents.
I found last year, when I had the same problem, that it was actually cheaper to convert than it was to refill with old gas. They wanted a little over $200 for a full charge of freon, but charged $175 to change it over. Don't regret it at all!
Thanks for the information. I think I 'm gonna check a local AC place and go for the oonversion. R12 is gold in most places and with the 134, I can home wrench if needed.
Thanks again.

If you want to be  start from the back end working forward...replace everything....then your system will work.....don't be mickey mouse....do it right or don't do it at all......been there done that......

I'm in Florabama. Was that a complete evacuate and refill? I'd just had a compressor lock up and needed a full refill. Figured $175 for a flush, canister, vacuum, and fill was a good deal anyway. And it will continue to save me money for years to come.
don't know where you live but McJack's Corvette in Santa Ana, CA gets $75 to recharge R12. Did mine.
