Scan/Performance Tools.... What's The Best?
High, Ho Silver.... :chevy AWAYYY!!!!

For your 96 vette you might want to check out the Ease OBD2 tools at http://www.obd2.com or http://www.easesim.com
I use the laptop version of Ease Simulations Personal GM Scan tool for OBD1 on my 88 coupe. After purchasing the OBD1 tool I liked it so much that I became a part time sales rep for Ease. Ease offers both OBD1 and OBD2 tools. I now have a Pro OBD2 version which I use for demos and friends vehicles. With my Ease OBD2 tool, I have scanned both a 2001 Z06 and my neighbors 1998 GMC Truck. The Ease tool will work with every GM OBD2 vehicle.
The Ease OBD2 scan tool allows you to clear OBD codes just like the GM Factory tool if the vehicle PCM supports it. Ease is a licensed partner with GM and offers Factory prom reprogram upgrades. Ease offers a Personal version OBD2 tool for $350 which only scans the Powertrain system. They also offer a Pro version at $595 which accepts a Body & Chassis module $295 to scan the ABS and chassis computers.
For about $770 (last time I checked of the Mac page) with the capability to scan OBD1 & OBD2 GM, Ford, Chrysler vehicles, the Mac tool is a pretty good deal. For the DIYer or general mechanic it probably is one of the best choices available if not the best. I lost their web page, but a google search for Mac scan tools should find it.
As a rep for Ease I can get you a rebate of 10% on anything you order through me. If you become interested in an Ease scan tool, let me know and I'll be glad to send you more info from use on my vette as well as some screen captures of the tool in action.

Auto Tap is a bargain at its under $300 price tag, it only goes up from there. Ease is at over $350 depending on if you want a personal version or a professional version. I don't know if its true or not but I have heard that Ease locks or limits its personal products so that its use is limited to a certain number of cars.
On the other end of the spectrum are professional scan tools such as the GM and now Vetronix TECH2 that goes for over $3000 depending on how you buy it. I was lucky enough to be able to purchase mine direct from GM tools going through a dealership for $2300, but at that price there is no software loaded into the tool.
However if you buy it from the dealer we just connect the tool to the GM Access computer and download all of the software directly into the tool. Also the TECH2 can take datalogging sessions that can be played back later on a PC with its specfic interface software. The other plus is that with the same software package I can perform PCM, VCM and body module programming on all GM products. Not to mention a myriad of other functions that the TECH2 can perform on the cars. But the one thing about the TECH2 is that its GM specific only, but then there really isn't anything else I want to work on or tune or would want to own anyway :)
There are other scan tools made by Snap On, MAC Tools and also OTC. It all depends on your needs and how deep your pockets are.
