A rocker arm tick from a misadjusted rocker is MUCH louder than injector ticking. If you happen to have the valve covers off and know how to set the lash on the hydraulic lifter top end, start the engine and slowly back off one of the adjuster nuts. You'll be able to easily hear the difference between rocker and injector ticking at that point.
If you don't have the valve cover off, get an automotive stethoscope and start the engine. Put the stethoscope on the valve cover. You'll be able to hear rocker ticking pretty clearly if it's there.

With a stethescope to the head itself, you hear everything that's going on there including normal valvetrain action. Lots of clicking/clacking/whirring, but an improperly adjusted valve produces a loud *snap*, shouldn't be too hard to detect.
As an added bonus, you get V8 rumble direct-injected into your brain, it's like having your head inside the muffler. Once I start that, I don't want to stop.
