Actually it would be rather easy to build the SLP style ram-air intake since you have an '85 Vette with straight radiator.

This system has a closed top filter lid with a rectangular fiberglass scoop that extends down the radiator shroud, through a rectangular cut-out in the front of the shroud into the air stream in front of the radiator opening, just above the spoiler.

If you like I can e-mail some pics of the pieces.

thanks, I actually already have a ram air type system that you have described to me, I built it my self and it seems to work well :yesnod:
what I was actually refering to was a Lingerfelter type super ram plenum and runner set up.

the reason that I posted was because it seems so simple to make, i was wondering if anyone else has attemped it

WELDING AND MACHINEING SOMETHING UP IS NOT QUITE AS EASY AS IT LOOKS!
GETTING IT TO FLOW EVENLY IS EVEN HARDER
yes you can do it but theres alot more to it than just sticking a few parts together!
it took me $4500 and 9 proto types to get the custom plenum that fits under a C-4 hood and fits on a stealth ram base to flow and fit correctly

the stock TPI base is a restiction, since most of us dont have the skills and resources to cast and machine your own base, you migh want to start with either the OFFENHAUSER BASE

or modify a TUNNEL RAM BASE LIKE the stealth ram, EDELBROCK or HILBORN constant flo mechanical fuel injector base

Aaah understood, you want to shift the torque curve up the power band some.

Have you considered the siamese base? You could try it on your stock base since you are going to replace it anyway.

The effect is to increase the runner diameter and shorten them a little too. I lost a little low end torque (less than .1sec increase in 60' time though) and gained 20hp at 5,400rpm; that was from only a 1"deep x 1" high cut. I have increased the cut depth to 2" but haven't gotten onto a dyno since so don't know if it resulted in a further increase in top end breathing.

grumpyvette, I see you do not have a smogpump, or air cond. I was wondering what you had to go through to get it that way. Thanks

What if you were to use a Victor jr intake for a base and made a pipe going
to a throttle body off of a ls motor.Hot Rod magazine said at one time this was
the best all around intake for a small block,so why not modify it for port fuel
and a throttle body location in the front of it and plumb it to the intake, would
you not get enough ram effect out of it?

The victor jr intake is the basis of most aftermarket EFI kits. The edelbrock multiport and the accell seem to use it unchanged except for the injector bosses. They use it with a 4 barrel style TB but you could probably use and adapter of sorts. Youd lose your egr and maybe a few other things too though.

Grumpy - glad to see you got that thing done. I talked to you about doing this mod ages ago. Wow, guess I wouldn't have saved money over my TPIS miniram after all.

Why go through the hassle, now there is someone that is converting the readily available LT1/4 intakes to fit on the L98 engines. See this website:
http://www.lt1intake.com

Some one on this forum has already installed one of these converted intakes with pictures and results.

Well, because these intakes are not the same and will produce different results. the LT1 runner is really short, this intake is longer. I use a MiniRam on Vortec heads which is in-between in runner length.

True, then there is the ACCEL Super Ram that is also readily availble and does fit under the typical C4 hood.

I can't remember the exact length, flow volume, etc. But I think grumpy looked at all this stuff. This format gives more volume or something than Super Ram with similar torque.
Lot's a ways to skin that cat.
