I have just installed a new Alpine autochanger in my 86 vert. So as to keep the original look I have hidden it and left the Bose in place.
Question:
Does any know if the speaker units in the front amplifiers are High impedance or can I wire to them from the new unit ?
Are the grills in the dash pad for real or are just dummies, if so how do I get to them ?
How the h?ll do you get the speaker boxes out of the front doors ????
I believe the stock Bose speakers are incompatible with new equipment (decks or amps).
Yes, you can put speakers behind the holes in the dash pad. The shop I had install mine took the dash pad out and put some cloth over the holes... looks great.
I did manage to get the speaker boxes out of the front doors with some 'manipulation'. I don't recall exactly what I did, since it was a few years ago, but I was able to get the speaker boxes out without damaging/cutting anything. So, if I ever need to, I can put the original system back in.
I have totally replaced my sound system, but kept all original speaker grills... the only thing you can see is the in-dash head unit/changer. Two amps and cross-overs are mounted in the stow area behind the passenger seat.
Thanks for the info, I got an Alpine 0134r with a chms630 changer.
I got this because it was cheap and has a remote, with the monza system and the top down 'hi fi' is a bit hopeless.

Re: front speakers (The Hobbit)
The Bose dash has solid plastic filling the speaker holes. I removed the mesh cover, and cut a hole in the plastic to mount my tweeters below the surface. If you have 4x6s, they might bolt right up to the plastic (after cutting out the hole) without any other modifications.
I believe the part was the same between Bose and non-Bose, except the hole isn't cut out.
I don't know much about it, but the Bose speakers I think have a non-standard impedance and can't be driven with a normal aftermarket stereo amp. Or at least they won't sound like they should if you do.
Replace those Bose speakers, they're old and nasty by now. I kept all the factory speaker covers, so it all looks stock except for the headunit.

Don't give up hope! With tweeters in the dash pad and a good amp(s) to drive all the speakers, it can rock even at freeway speeds! Mine cranks up plenty loud and with the new subwoofer I just put in, it rocks your socks off no matter how fast you're drivin' :D It's not especially cheap, though.
