Default Intake Manifold Question

I've got an 87 with about 86,000 miles. It's just about time to replace the intake manifold gasket. While I've got that thing off, are there any other things I should replace while I'm at it? So far I'm thinking about the oil pressure sensor and the thermostat, but I'm not sure what else I ought to consider taking care of.

If you are that far into it I would change the EGR valve..

You're probably gonna want to change the timing set, lifters and springs. All else is secondary. Just make sure the valve train is OK.

Make sure that you place about a 3/8 bead of high temp silicone at the front and back of the intake manifold and insure that you get it in the corners where the heads and manifold meet. The last thing you want is a leak in the front or the rear.

I'd go ahead and do the minor stuff if you haven't already.. plugs/wires/coil/thermostat, and while you have the upper pieces off, consider gasket matching and porting the plenum. If there's a bunch of buildup from the pcv and egr, try sandblasting it out, and make sure you get all the sand out afterwards.

After draining the coolant and removing the thermostat housing, use a shop vac to suck all the water out of the intake base.

Also, get a soft 3m sanding disc for removing the gaskets.

If you plan on doing the timing set (I wouldn't.. not much of the labor overlaps), but if you do, consider doing a cam swap, since it's a 15 minute job at that point.

And don't use the supplied gaskets for the ends of the intake, use rtv, and use rtv around the coolant ports.

Also, Use permatex #2 on the intake manifold bolts, and use the proper torque sequence when reinstalling the manifold.

Get an intake gasket kit from Felpro from your local auto parts store. I think it runs about $25 bones and contains ALL the gaskets and seals you'll need, including the O-rings for the injectors.

For sealant, use "The Right Stuff" (I've seen it at NAPA) or Copper RTV silicone.

It would be a very good time to change out the spark plug wires as they will be completely exposed.

Also locate the EGR temp sensor plug behind the dist and near the brake booster. Splice a length of green wire and move that connector up near the blower motor. If you need to remove the EGR temp sensor with the motor together it will save you lots of headaches or cutting/splicing later.

aww heck, while you got it off, might as well put better heads and a cam in it. and since you got it down that far , may as well yank the bottom end and stroke it. then may as well .........
thats what happened to me.. just plan it out and stick to it no matter what..
cars will take as much money as your willing to give, ( just like my wife).
