Sorry to hear you're going through this. I had the same fear when my lifter collapsed. The split second those runners we're open, I taped the hell out of them so nothing would fall in. Here's to you getting everything 100 percent.

Whatever you do, DO NOT turn the engine over!
Actually I started the car up because I felt it was no big deal and it runs great! It's a little noisy down there in that cylendar, but no big deal. I figure with enough runs at the track, things will calm down and maybe it will eventurally burn up and not be a problem any more!

That's payback for your drawing Jesse ;)

No, I'm not cranking anything over and I will get these things out. I didn't sleep too well last night after working on it all day Sunday, but that's OK.

Does anyone know where to buy strong magnets?

The GREAT news is that these are the small ones that hook into the lid, and mine ARE very magnetic. So we'll get those babies outta there one way or the other. It just figures that it would happen withing 30 seconds of my taking the towels outta the runners.

Cheers,
Shayne

They're also very small. Do you know where your balancer is right now? If its at TDC for 1 or 6? Or something else?

3 bolts!!

If you have a shop vac or a house vac with really good suction, you could possibly suck them back up. You wouldn't have to put the hose all the way down the runner, just hold your hand at the end of the hose to try and seal up the runner area. It's worth a try!

Good Luck

Don't you worry, I'll get all three of them outta there. I just had to get a sense as to where they were landing. Be glad I didn't drop all 16 down there!!!!! hahahahahaha ROFL

If the magnet trick didn't work, then you have to pull off the runner and maybe the lower intake.

There is no other choice, sorry.

How big was the bolt ?

Vic
It was one of the small ones that holds the lid on, but magnetic.

Even though its a pain yank the plenum and the passenger side runer. Then get a magnet on a wand down there, taht SHOULD get it. Whatever you do don't turn the engine over.
Thought never crossed my mind to crank it over so no worries there.

Do you have any friends that are mechanics?

I did the same thing and I did not know what runner it went down, but I borrowed a friends bore scope and used it to look down the runner. I saw the bolt and used one of those long springy tools with a magnet on the end of it.

D*mn, I know how you feel.

Good luck.
I have TONS of friends that are mechanics, YOU GUYS!!! But no one really local sorry.

Here's one, turn the car upside down and shake. :lolg:   :D Don't give up it's doable.
Thought has crossed my mind believe it or not :D

Here is my schematic :lolg: I had fun drawing that.

You're so evil. :D
I Agree!

Since I'm lazy and didn't read everything..... what kind of bolt was it dropped in? Was it one of the superram plenum lid bolts? God I hope not, they're small.
Yep, it was. The hold on the plenum on the corner wasn't an exact fit for the bolt because of a nitrous kit that was previously installed, so I was messing with that at the time, just after taking the protection out of the tubes. Duhhhhhh.

DId you get any of the bolts out? I'm not sure I would have thrown another 2 down in there. :skep:

That is 3 x the chance of knocking one down past the valve if its open. Again make sure that the ones you dropped down in there, are able to be picked up by a magnet. If you have luck like mine, they won't be.
Yes probably not the best idea but at 1:30-2:00am...

Is tha balancer at 0* right now? If so its either TDC for 1 or 6, where does that put the #8 intake?

18436572

8 is either on its intake stroke (yikes) or somewhere around the end of its exhaust stroke right?
I don't know where we're at. I can go home and take some more photos of if you like. I can tell you that I did NOT set to TDC before starting this project. I did take overhead photos of where the distributor was before I started pulling it apart. Will that help you? I know it can be on either stroke intake or otherwise, so I'm not sure that it would, but I can look up that photo for you and find it.

Here is what I do.

Yeah, sucks doesn't it? I couldn't believe it when it went down. It was like seeing life in slow motion. Not a thing you could do. It's funny, but it didn't bother me so much that the bolt went down there as it did that I just took the protection off of those holes only 30 seconds earlier. Ouch. I was trying to be careful, but I guess not enough.

Hey Shayne, where is the balancer pointing?
Don't know, but I'll go home and take some more photos (if you haven't gathered yet, I'm good at photos :D and post them)

Cheers!
Shayne

Yes, a picture of where the distributor rotor was will be a great help!!! That will tell us exactly where the piston should be in that cylinder. Since they are plenum bolts they "will" come out a sparkplug hole if it comes down to needing to secure a magnet to a piece of rubber vacuum line or something and going in that way. The nice thing is that your intake is aluminum, so the magnet won't get stuck on it while you try to fish them out of the intake. :)

OK, I'll find it and post it. It's on my home computer. The only reason why I even have it is because I was trying to document how I took this thing apart so I could get it back together. But look what happened anyway!!! :D :D   :D :D

On purpose, I dropped two more down there to see if I could tell how far they fall when they do and where they drop to.

So let me get this straight. You dropped one bolt on accident, then you dropped two more on purpose to compound the problem

Hey Try Sears on the magnet. They make them on a telescoping handle.

Shayne,

I all honesty the drawing was intended to be helpful :yesnod: But it turned out to be less than a professional schematic. Maybe the bolt dangling by the head was too much animation. I understand your dilema and believe me I was not making fun of it, or trying to make light of the situation. The conversation just went that way and the drawing was actually, while intended to be helpful, turned out to be a bit comical. :smash: I guess I will leave the illustrations to the experts in the future. :leaving:
