Started out for dinner tonight with club members and after 5 miles it started to miss. As I pulled over it died. Sat for a minute and restarted with no miss. Drove it home and in the garage, took the Aztek to dinner. Sounds like the saga of the 92-94 opti-spark. Is Jeff the best for prices? How much time should it take?
While I'm at it would it be wise to change the plugs and wires? What would be the best to put in? Thanks for the advise.
Re: engine miss and then quit...possible opti? (Slick94)
You can check around, but I think you will find that Jeff (Chris) has one of the lowest prices on OEM. YOu could probably do it in a few hours if everything goes exactly right and you have the proper tools. I figureded on a weekend and 2 six packs. :D It took about 8 hrs as I took my time.
Oh yea, I also replaced my water pump, while I was in there. At least change the water pump and opti seals in the timing cover. Good insurance.

Here is something else to look at http://www.corvetteclinicinc.com look under C-4 solutions. I had him vent my brand new opti for about $100. Probably too high, but I wanted it right and he did a nice job. Most guys that vent now, use a 95-96 cap on a 92-94 distributor base. The 95-96 cap has the vent tube on it. Check all the easy stuff first, then think about the opti.

Bad idea. The whole Opti replacement for 92-94 is $330, then the rebuild kit with cap is another $200. Save $200 and just mod the new cap. It only takes an hour or two.
Re: engine miss and then quit...possible opti? (Slick94)
Thanks for the input guys. Guess I'll order the parts tomorrow. Still would like input on brand of plugs and wires.
In addition to the water pump inspection, I'd replace the wires and plugs, too. It's all relevant labor while your in there and added peace of mind down the road. I used AutoLite Platinum plugs and O.E.M. wires.
Re: engine miss and then quit...possible opti? (Slick94)
I used NGK Iridiums and MSD Super Conductor Wires. Taylors are good, too. The plug for my 92 LT-1 is TR55IX, a little pricey, but they work fine. Stay away from the AC Delco Professional Platinums as someguys have had the platinum pucks fall off. Checkout the Tech Tips for some guidance on the job.
Re: engine miss and then quit...possible opti? (Slick94)
Thanks for all the help. I have a new opti, water pump, hose kit and seals on order from Superior. I'll get the wires and plugs locally. I should have the parts next week sometime.
Re: engine miss and then quit...possible opti? (Slick94)
BTW: Once you've removed the hoses and water pump. plugs and wires are not nearly as hard as they look.
ONLY, if you remove the driver's side fender. It's only about 6 bolts, takes 5 minutes to remove, and you can get to every plug with a socket/ratchet and 3" extension.

Have you checked your fuel pump pressures???????
When was the last time you changed you fuel filter??????
Just one of my simple thoughts....
Good Luck

I called a dealer just to see how much I was saving over Mid-America's ...
Are you doing Opti work because you're having problems??? Or are you just doing maintenance???
I wouldn't mess with a rebuild considering it's the optical pickup that tends to go bad, not just the cap and rotor. If you find any rust in there I wouldn't mess around and just buy new from Superior @ ~$330. Replace it once and forget about it.
P.S. Make sure you put Black RTV around the cap gasket and electrical connection!

:iagree:
Plus bearing and seals fail as well. Replace it.
Re: engine miss and then quit...possible opti? (BrianCunningham)
Yes you should replace your Opti and Waterpump timing chain cover seals anyway. It's cheap insurance. Just make sure you're gentle and use a tool to put the waterpump seal on. Do a search for procedures. The Opti seal simply presses into the cover but you have to make sure the lip is not folded over the input shaft of the Opti unit or you'll get a nasty oil leak. IM me your email and I'll send you a copy of my Opti replacement guide. You won't have to vent yours but you can pick through the guide for tips.
If you have hestation on load then that IMHO means there's something wrong with your optical pickup and it might no be able to advance your timing appropriately. I could be wrong, but there's no way it's just the cap and rotor.
I too didn't think I had water but wait until you take a look behind your waterpump and inside your opti before you come to a conclusion. I had scale running out the back seal on the opti which is a clear sign.
Don't mess around! Just replace the Opti. Yours sounds like it's in even worse shape than mine was and when I opened mine everything was covered in rust.
