It is for getting the seal over the water pump spline without having the lips of the seal fold back.

I got the hub off today, that was FUN! :cuss

The hub isn't keyed to the crank. :rolleyes:

The mark on the hub is a good 4 inches from the rib on the cover.
So what's the tollerance on getting it lined back up.
