Climate Control Fixed (88)
I read all the tech tips and then removed the front panel. Cleaned the contacts and put it back about 4 times but the display was still tempremental. I then applied a thin layer of solder to all the contacts on the board and that did the trick, except that the ‘cooler’ button was not working.
I thought I was up for a new unit, then decided that if I was going to replace it anyway I might as well have a look inside. I was encouraged by someone here who told me they had gone into one side and found a key pad had slipped and fixed it using tweezers.
I tried to lift one end of the back panel, it’s held on with melted plastic pins. I wasn’t getting anywhere so decided to remove all the pins. Turned out that the keypad for the ‘cooler’ button had slipped b ecause one of the posts was missing.
All the pads are similar to TV Remotes, a small circle of black probably graphite material embedded in a plastic mebrane which acts as a spring. When you press down the black material makes contact between two lines on the circuit board. I cleaned everything with a cotton bud soaked in Methylated Spirits (rubbing alcohol).
The circuit board was in excellent condition. Looked as if it was laquered when new.
I taped the board back on and tested it – all OK. I then clamped it down and applied a blob of 5 minute Araldite (Epoxy) to what remained of each post. I’m not convinved that the Araldite will hold onto the greasy plastic so I also taped around the edge – there was just enough room to fit the front panel back into the plastic holding box.
Now everything works !
My blower motor only has one speed, from research here it looks likely it’s the blower module which has various rheostats in it or hopefully just the 5amp fuse on the Firewall……..that’s a job for next week. (My vette is RHD so the heater is upside down on the LH Side, nothing’s where it normally is. I’ve no idea what the 5 amp fuse looks like. http://www.myvette.20m.com )
