My C4 has 230,000 km's on, still love driving it. Latest problem is the front brakes. The brake calipers have two guide pins that go into the mounting braket attached to the spindle. The mounting bracket holes are worn oversize, so the calipers have too much play. Brakes rattle, and all that stuff. GM doesn't support the mounting bracket, I don't want to "re-invent the wheel" Any suggestions?
I've got the stock wheels that I'm not changing (spent 2 days with them on a lathe getting them super shinny). I've tried used mounting brackets, but they ended up being just as worn as mine. I don't want to put used parts on the car. Anybody upgraded to the '88 or later brakes? Is it a big deal, or can I just bolt the stuff on?
I'm not a racer or hard driver, just enjoy the car.
If I understand this correctly, you're saying G.M. doesn't offer new caliper brackets or guide pins for your year?
And you wanna hang on to your stock rims right? You're gonna need to find a source for new bkts, or check into the J55 upgrade for you're year. I'm not sure that 16" rims will allow for that upgrade. But someone here should know for sure.
GM still supports the calipers, guide pins ( I relaced the guide pins, but it didn't help), but NOT the mounting brackets. I have not been able to find a new replacement bracket.
So the question would be, will the J55 brakes go on stock '87 wheels. Where would I go about finding that info??

I think we are having the same problem. The rattling is very nagging. I notice though that I had some play between the outside caliper and the brake pad. I'm not sure if that's causing the rattling or if it's the guide pin being worn out. someone on the board suggested I check for the anti-rattle clip on the pads and mine were gone. I'll replace them and see. keep us posted.
