Most makers of capacitive discharge ignition systems tell you to bypass the tach filter.
As far as I know, the only C4 that didn't have a tach filter is the '96. On the '96, the ECM has a dedicated tach signal output from the ECM to the tach. On the others, the tach is normally driven from the ignition coil negative side. Since this signal has spikes on it, the tach filter is needed to eliminate the spikes. But, with the CDI systems, there are no spikes, so the tach filter isn't needed.
You have to bypass the tach filter. On mine, the filter had two white wires and a black wire (looks like a small "rubbery" box). Simply cut the two white wires (make sure you leave enough room to reconnect if needed) and wire them together. I'll see if I have some pics of the filter itself... :)
ever here of the asr light coming on after hooking up the msd box?
The same tach signal that goes to the tach from the tach filter goes to the ABS/ASR computer for ASR activity.
When you bypass the tach filter, I suspect that not only will it fix your tach, it will fix your ASR problem.
